Katy Perry is rather eclectic in her tastes, but one might not expect those tastes to include a manor of Italian design, replete with outbuildings and eight acres of land. She seems a bit too ‘pop star’ for that.

One might also not expect Katy Perry, a convent, and Charles Manson to all have something in common–but they do.

Katy Perry has made an offer to buy the aforementioned building–which is a convent once inhabited by the nuns of the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It sits next door to the home where the infamous Charles Manson family murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca took place back in 1969.

Now Katy Perry is in a bit of a conundrum, because the nuns don’t want her to buy the convent. It’s got nothing to do with her big hit song ‘I Kissed A Girl’ either. Instead it’s because the nuns are busy trying to cut another deal. They want to buy the convent apart from the local archdiocese–at least some of them do. A few are holding out for Katy Perry’s offer.

The last five living nuns who inhabited the convent (they had to move out a few years ago because of money problems) believe they own the convent and that only they have the power to sell it. They quickly signed a deal with a buyer who wants to open a restaurant on the site. The diocese claims they are the rightful owners, and that only they can sell the convent. The archdiocese wants to go ahead with Katy Perry’s offer.

“We have given many years to this archdiocese and we have served them well,” Sister Rita, one of the remaining nuns, says. “For the archdiocese to … put us under a bus and run over us, I’m sorry, it was just too much for me.”

Perry has offered the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles $10 million in cash, as well as another $4.5 million to purchase a facility for the priests who will occasionally use the convent for retreats.

Now the matter is in hands of the courts. Will Katy Perry wind up living in a convent next to where two of the Charles Manson murders took place?

Not if a couple of nuns have their way she won’t.
