Julianne Moore to Join Carrie Remake

For a lot of horror-obsessed individuals out there, director Kimberly Peirce's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's novel "Carrie" isn't a cause for celebration. The original film, spearheaded by filmmaker Brian De Palma, is considered by many genre fanatics to be a timeless classic, and any modern interpretations of the book is hardcore blasphemy. Although I love the film as much as any other horror nerd, I can easily understand why the 1976 version can't hold the undivided attention of younger movie-goers who were raised on flashier films.

"Hugo" and "Kick Ass" alumni Chloë Grace Moretz has already snagged the titular role, though most of us are more curious about who will portray Carrie's seriously unbalanced mother in the upcoming motion picture. Rumors started swirling last month that the acclaimed actress would tackle the role of Margaret White, a part made famous by Piper Laurie. Anyone who has ever uttered the sentence "They're all going to laugh at you!" is already well-versed in the demented ways of Carrie's mother. Her performance still gives me chills.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Columbia Pictures is currently in talks with Moore about her participation in the film, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

This, of course, isn't the first time "Carrie" has been remade. In 2002, director David Carson brought the story to the small screen, casting horror darling Angela Bettis in the lead role.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the book or the original film, "Carrie" chronicles the day-to-day sufferings and humiliations of a homely high school girl who can never seem to catch a break. When she isn't being tormented by her nefarious classmates, the poor girl is being horribly abused by her religiously fanatical mother. Little do they know that Carrie has destructive telekinetic powers, and she isn't afraid to put them to good use when she's backed into a corner.

As mentioned, Julianne Moore is currently in negotiations to take on the role, which means that nothing is set in stone. As of this writing, Moretz is the only actor officially attached to the project.

Not surprisingly, Twitter was abuzz regarding the news.
