Joseph Gordon-Levitt is not going to be entering any bodybuilding contest anytime soon. The 32 year old, star is also making his feature film directorial debut in the upcoming romantic comedy, “Don Jon”, opening this weekend discusses how he had to change his routine for the role.
“Bodybuilding is not my thing.” Gordon-Levitt said. “I like to play basketball with my friends on the weekends or I’ll ride a bike for some exercise but this character is very vain. He’s very concerned with how he looks. He has a very rigid set of expectations of what a man is supposed to look like.”
Gordon-Levitt, 32, is referring to his new role in the upcoming film, “Don Jon”, where he plays a “Jersey Shore” type, macho man looking to find true love with co-star, Scarlett Johanssen. In the film, Gordon-Levitt’s character is obsessed with what he believes a man should look like. This is based off the pornography he watches and how the media helps perpetuate this image. “I wanted to tell a story about how people are treated more like things than people. Maybe it was because I grew up working as an actor in TV and movies, and actors are sometimes treated more like things. But I don’t think it’s just actors – everyone experiences this. And I was also very curious to talk about how media plays into that. So I thought a story about a relationship between a young man how watches too much pornography and a young woman who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies would be a funny way to get at this question.”
It’s a very interesting topic Gordon-Levitt is ready to tackle and another venture into a role that makes him one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors.
“Don Jon” opens this Friday.
