Relationships are hard, especially if both parties are in the very public eye that is focused on Hollywood at all times. And sometimes, innocent people get hurt when the relationship is dissolved.
That’s what Jenny McCarthy says happened to her 10-year old son, Evan, who is autistic and who bonded with actor Jim Carrey during her five-year relationship with him. She told Howard Stern on his radio show on Monday that Evan is devastated that Carrey has seemingly abandoned him and asks weekly if he can see the actor.
“I’ve tried to ask [Jim] numerous times [to see Evan], because my son still asks. As a mother, you just hope when you have a relationship with someone, it has nothing to do with the child when you break up,” she said. ”I tell [Evan] that someday you’ll cross paths, meet again … [but] it’s hard. He’s been in therapy. It’s a process, he’s working on it.”
According to US Weekly, however, a source close to Carrey denies McCarthy ever reached out to him.
“[Jenny] never reached out directly to him, so that’s a bit of a stretch for her to say,” the source said. “Sometimes it’s really too painful to still be involved with an ex’s child’s life, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about [Evan] or love him.”
On his part, Carrey says he still loves Evan and still has the boy’s best interests at heart. It’s possible that he doesn’t want to confuse the child or give him hope that he and McCarthy will reunite.
“I will always do what I believe is in the best interest of Evan’s well being,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that Evan’s privacy is not being considered. I love Evan very much and will miss him always.”
