There was a teaser last week that pointed to Jet Set Radio being the next HD Dreamcast classics release coming out. Turns out we were right!
Sega announced today on their blog that an HD version of Jet Set Radio will be hitting the PSN, XBLA and PC this summer. For those unfamiliar with the game, it tasks players to take control of Tokyo-to using graffiti. What do you use your awesome graffiti skills on? The usual suspects including walls and billboards, but also rival gang members for the ultimate humiliation.
Sega provides a better description than I could of what the game’s story is about:
Jet Set Radio lets players join the GGs, an up-and-coming street gang in the futuristic city of Tokyo-to, fighting for the right to self-expression against an overbearing, corporate-controlled police force. Rolling and leaping through crowded urban environments on magnetically driven inline skates, players take control of gang leader Beat and his growing posse of deviant artists as they steal turf from the local gangs by covering the city with colorful graffiti. Guided by Professor K, DJ for the hottest pirate broadcast in town – “Jet Set Radio” – the GGs will ultimately uncover the sinister plot hatched by the controlling powers of Tokyo-to.
While seeing the return of this classic would be cause enough for celebration, there’s also a contest involved that will see winners having their graffiti design placed in the game. The contest is open to U.S. and UK citizens (sorry Canada and the rest of Europe) and tasks them with creating 18 pieces of new art that will be used in the game.
Winners will get some pretty awesome swag including a Rukus, a Bluetooth sound system that runs off solar power. For more details on the contest and the other awesome stuff you could win, check out the contest’s Web site.
As for me and my lack of artistic skills, I’ll be patiently waiting for the release of the first really good game to come out of the Dreamcast HD classics line. This does lead me to wonder when we’ll be seeing the excellent Sonic Adventure 2 announced because that would make my, and plenty of other people’s, day.
