  • Jean Stapleton, the actress who portrayed Edith Bunker on the TV show All in the Family, has died at the age of 90.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, Stapleton died Friday at her home in New York City. Her family stated that she died of natural causes.

Stapleton, New York City native, began her career in the 1940s, acting in Broadway musicals such as Damn Yankees and Funny Girl. She made the jump to TV during the 60s, appearing on shows such as Dennis the Menace, Car 54 Where Are You?, and The Patty Duke Show.

In 1971, Stapleton was cast as Edith Bunker, the wife of lovable bigot Archie Bunker, who was played by Carroll O’Connor. The show, which famously dealt with issues that were controversial in 70s America, was a major success, and stayed on the air for nine seasons. Stapleton reprised her role as Edith Bunker in the spin-off series Archie Bunker’s Place, which aired from 1979 until 1983.

Stapleton continued her acting career throughout the 80s and 90s, appearing in guest roles in TV shows such as Bagdad Cafe and Murphy Brown, and in movies such as Michael and You’ve Got Mail.
