Just in case there was still anyone thinking that James Franco does not want to be a part of everything that he possibly can, it has now been announced that he is adapting yet another book.
Franco will direct a film about a low-budget film called The Room. The film will be called The Disaster Artist, and it is an adaptation of the behind-the-scenes memoir titled The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room. The book was co-written by Greg Sestero, who also appeared in the film, and Tom Bissell, a journalist.
The Room is written and directed by Tommy Wisueau, who is also the main star of the film. It tells the story of Johnny, a successful banker who lives happily in a San Francisco townhouse with his fiancée, Lisa. One day, inexplicably, she gets bored of him and decides to seduce Johnny’s best friend, Mark.
Sestero’s book involves two separate story-lines–his relationship with Wisueau in addition to his quest to become an actor in Hollywood. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said “I felt really strongly about the story. The only way to tell how this thing went down – the good, the bad, the ugly and the inspiring parts – was to write it and explain how it all happened. Really, when you read this book you can walk away with a great laugh, which we all need these days.
The Room is a lesser-known, low-budget film that was released in 2003. Although it was not seen by many people, it did end up reaching cult status, gaining the interest of some people, including James Franco.
Franco is a fitting choice to adapt the Greg Sestero’s book after highly praising it in a review for Vice magazine in December.
After having already recently adapted As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner and Child Of God by Cormac McCarthy, Sestero is pleased with the announcement that Franco will be involved with an adaptation of his book. The actor/author said “James Franco, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are the ideal guys to adapt The Disaster Artist.”
The Room has been viewed as the worst film of all time by some people due to the way in which it was made, although some people like the simplicity and bizarre aspects of it, and continue to rave about it.
James Franco and actor/producer Vince Jolivette will produce the film along with frequent collaborators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who are also good friends of Franco’s. The film’s cast has not been set, and the release date is unknown.
