Director James Cameron is boldly going where no man has gone before, or at least since 1960. Cameron has funded the construction of a high-tech one-man submarine capable of diving seven miles beneath the Pacific Ocean into the Mariana Trench, and he intends to take it there.

This is no joke, the director of the hit film Titanic is undertaking a maiden voyage of his own, and he’s 100% sure this vessel will sink. Outfitted with multiple HD cameras he will explore one of the deepest ocean trenches on Earth. The expedition is a technological nightmare, but he’s ready. You have to watch these incredible National Geographic videos with Cameron:

At 36,000 feet below sea level, the technological requirements of the expedition are similar to what is required to put a man on the Moon. Deepsea Challenger, as he has named the craft, is outfitted with all the navigation, safety, communication, and documentation equipment one could imagine and more, but this still won’t be an easy mission for the inexperienced explorer. It will be a test of both, engineering and man.

HIs decent will take over two hours and he could spend as many as six hours on the ocean floor. There is no telling what he will find down there or if communication with the surface will even be possible. It’s very exciting, and I commend him on his bravery and dedication to the project. Did you know we know more about outer space than we know about life in the ocean at the depths he’ll be charting?

This is sure to be the best footage he has ever put out, I can’t wait to see what the cameras capture. Good luck Captain Cameron. We wish you a safe voyage.
