Chris Rock’s speech sparked controversy after he took a jab at Jada Pinkett Smith and her move to not attend this year’s Oscars.
Not everyone was impressed with Rock’s joke at the event. Fast and Furious actor Tyrese Gibson spoke out about Rock’s mocking speech about Jada, who called for a boycott of the Academy on social media last month to protest the lack of black nominees.

Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband, rapper-actor Will Smith, who recently starred in Concussion, were among the many black Hollywood celebrities who did not attend this year’s Oscars for its apparent lack of racial diversity.
Gibson took to Instagram to defend Jada Pinkett Smith against Rock’s explosive joke, which he found “tasteless.”
“Someone posted the tasteless joke that Chris Rock did in his opening,” Gibson wrote. “Did you really use your STAGE to tear down and diminish one of the strongest most fearless black women IN this town as the world watched???”
“Jokes are just jokes right???? Not when someone is trying to affect change……… Not when someone is willing to put it ALL on the line to affect change for our daughters and sons of the future…….. Shame on you Chris Rock.”
On the other hand, Will Smith has not yet commented on Rock’s comical speech. “Jada got mad, Jada says she’s not coming, protesting, I’m like — doesn’t she have a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock quipped.

Maybe the power couple was not really bothered by the host’s monologue at all. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been friends with the comedian for many years now. Rock and Will have known each other for over 20 years, while he and Jada have worked on three Madagascar movies together. Perhaps it was just Rock’s way of reminding the audience of the #OscarSoWhite issue.
