When the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 finally are revealed, they could be much more powerful than before.

Imagination Technologies announced at CES that they have developed the first IP cores in their PowerVR Series6 GPU core line: the PowerVR G6200 and G6400. Imagination Technologies is probably most well known for providing the GPU cores for the custom ARM processors that power the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Imagination is promising that the new PowerVR Series6 GPU cores can deliver 20 times more power than their current GPU cores that are found in Apple’s flagship products but other Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S.

Nothing is concrete yet and as AppleInsider reports, Apple was not listed among the partners that the new processors were being licensed to. They report that Apple is a major shareholder in Imagination so nothing is out of the question yet either.

AppleInsider also reports that they have heard rumors that the next generation iPad 3 and iPhone 5 are going to run off of a supposed A6 chip that could be powered by these new GPUs.

We reported last week that the iOS 5.1 beta had code that hinted at a quad-core processor powering the A6 chip. A quad-core processor would tie in nicely to these new rumors of a much more powerful GPU.

We’ll hopefully find out soon enough as Apple’s iPad 3 is rumored to ship in March of this year.
