It’s a high school tradition to crown the homecoming queen during the annual homecoming game. The girl crowned is usually the most popular and pretty girl in the senior class. However, the queen crowned at Huntsville High School, was not your typical queen: she’s better.

Even though the Huntsville Hornets were not victorious during their game, the night was still a success for one girl.

18-year-old, Estefania Martinez, doesn’t know a stranger and makes friends everywhere she goes. So, when she was crowned Homecoming Queen on Friday night, the whole community was excited for her.

Estefania suffered complications at birth, which left her with permanent brain damage. According to her mother, Alejandrina, they were told that Estefania would never be able to walk or talk. However, Estefania beat all the odds stacked against her. Not only does she walk and talk, she is known by her peers as one of the nicest girls in school.

“I think Estefania is one of the nicest girls I know,” said Aaron Cardenas, a student at Huntsville High School. “Every time I see her, she says hi.”

Whitney Stubbs, another fellow student says, “I think she deserves it, because she’s worked hard to get where she is. And the fact that we all love her.”

When the time came for Esefania to take her spot on the field, she walked arm-in-arm with her family. When it was announced that she was the new queen, she couldn’t contain her excitement and raised her hands joyfully over her head.

Estefania was just as excited as any other nominee, if not more so. Alejandrina said during the days leading up to the crowning, Estefania couldn’t stop talking about it. In a heartwarming moment, Estefania told her mother, “I’m a princess!”
