One of the most famous wrestlers of all time made a shocking confession recently during an interview. Hulk Hogan said that at one point in his life, a very low point, he contemplated suicide.
“Everything got dark, everything happened at once,” Hogan said during an interview with Oprah on her “Where are they Now?” series . “I was drinking alcohol very heavily. It just all kept piling up, it all kept mounting and mounting I didn’t know how to handle it. I always wondered how could someone possibly take their own life and so I got to that point where I said, ‘You know what, maybe this would be easy. You know, maybe this would be an easy way to fix things.'”
A series of personal events contributed to his thoughts. In 2007, Hogan’s reality television show, “Hogan Knows Best”, was cancelled, his marriage was on the rocks, and his son was arrested for a DUI. Hogan realized that he was at his breaking point and started contemplating the unthinkable.
Hogan’s outlook on life completely changed on New Year’s Eve when he walked outside and received a hug from one of his biggest fans. It made him realize that he was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
“When I walked outside, some kid ran out and hugged me and was all, ‘I grew up watching you. I didn’t have a dad, and you’re like a dad to me,’” he said. “And there was another person that said, ‘Hey Hulk, we love you.’ And I went, oh my God. It was right then that it really … I didn’t understand what was going on, but it hit me that there was clean air and that there’s dirty air. And I, once I went back inside again, I realized that I couldn’t take it anymore. I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. I got sick and tired of the hating, the negativity, the verbal abuse, just everything that I was hearing.”
Now, six years later, Hogan recalls those days and says going through the tough times helped make him into the man he is today. “I now realize I had to go through all this stuff to be who I am today, to make me who I am today,” he said.
