Hideki Matsui has reportedly signed on with the Tampa Bay Rays in a minor league contract.
The former Yankee has played nine seasons in the major leagues and has a .285 career average. Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman said Matsui is “one of the most consistently productive hitters in the world” when he announced the acquisition today. Before signing on with the Yankees, Matsui was a star in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants. The move to minor leagues comes as a surprise to fans, who tweeted today the belief that he’s better than that.

Rays sign Hideki Matsui, to begin extended spring training this week. It’s almost as if he and Manny were traded for each other.
Signing Hideki Matsui is a low-risk move for the surging Rays, who are convinced he still has some pop remaining in that left-handed bat.
