As Fast & Furious 6 demonstrated earlier this year, a well-marketed car movie can mean box office success. Now, other movie studios are predictably jumping on the bandwagon, trying to develop their own car-movie franchises.

Sony, in particular, is looking to leverage its largest racing video game brand to get a car movie franchise moving. The project is reportedly an action movie, and will be led by producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, both of whom are producers on next year’s Fifty Shades of Grey movie.

Gran Turismo is one of the biggest video game franchises in history. The racing games have sold tens of millions of copies and are known for their sleek graphics. For over a decade, Sony’s Polyphony Digital studio has been developing the Gran Turismo titles.

The game will not be a launch title for Sony’s new PlayStation 4 console, though the Gran Turismo brand will no doubt be popular with current PlayStation 3 owners.
