Google announced today that Webmaster Tools will start letting you know when it discovers critical issues with your site, by sending you an email with more info. The company says it will only notify you about issues that it thinks have a significant impact on your site’s health or search performance and which have clear actions you can take to address the issue.
“For example, we’ll email you if we detect malware on your site or see a significant increase in errors while crawling your site,” says Google Webmaster Trends analyst John Mueller.
“For most sites these kinds of issues will occur rarely,” he adds. “If your site does happen to have an issue, we cap the number of emails we send over a certain period of time to avoid flooding your inbox. If you don’t want to receive any email from Webmaster Tools you can change your email delivery preferences.”
This is just the latest in a series of new alerts from Webmaster Tools. Last month, Google launched alerts for Search Queries data to complement the Crawl Errors alerts it began sending out before that.
Webmaster Tools also recently started sharing more detailed Site Error info, such as stats for each site-wide crawl error from the past ninety days. It also shows failure rates for category-specific error. More on that here.
