GNOME 51 has been released on schedule, in time for Ubuntu 26.10 and Fedora Workstation 45. The release is codenamed “A Coruña” after the Galician city that hosted GUADEC 2026 in July. It focuses on smoother graphics, a long list of Settings refinements, offline maps and several features aimed at workplace users, according to the official release notes.

Smoother graphics

Mutter’s reworked frame scheduling keeps animations smooth even when the system is under load. Screen recording is faster because there’s less redundant work and buffer copying, and GNOME now remembers monitor brightness across reboots and HDR toggling. The release also drops support for legacy NVIDIA driver interfaces (EGLStreams) and uses only modern, standard graphics interfaces. Phoronix noted that Mutter also gains support for the ext-background-effect-v1 Wayland protocol and custom pointer acceleration profiles.

Features for work setups

  • Remote Desktop: users can plug a workplace smartcard into the machine they’re working from and use it on the computer they’ve connected to. In Kerberos environments, users can log straight into a remote session without extra steps.
  • Settings: new DNS domain search options, Remote Login support for SSH socket servers, a new fingerprint enrollment interface, and removal of the outdated WEP Wi-Fi standard. Devices with an accelerometer get Auto Rotate with an orientation lock.
  • Software: warns before you install an app that’s no longer maintained, shows a fuller list of Flatpak file permissions and starts faster.
  • Calendar: rebuilt for responsiveness, with better support for Microsoft Teams meeting links in the event editor.
  • Papers: the document viewer can now insert visual signatures into documents.

Apps

Maps gets what GNOME calls its most exciting release in years: offline maps you can download by region, plus live departures, real-time delays, platform information and walking times for public transit. Files shows a count badge when dragging multiple items and no longer blocks on several slow operations. Web, GNOME’s browser, can generate strong passwords. The Sushi file previewer has been rebuilt on GTK 4 and libadwaita.

Distributions will pick up GNOME 51 over the coming weeks, starting with Ubuntu 26.10 and Fedora Workstation 45.
