Everyone enjoys a good horror movie every now and then. You spend around two hours jumping, shouting, and hiding your eyes and at the end you go home and sleep with every light in the house on. But what happens when the horror is real?
Former medium and ghost hunter Lorraine Warren, who spent years investigating reported hauntings with her demonologist husband Ed, claims to know all too well what can happen when humans and spirits meet off of the silver screen. The terrifying classic “The Amityville Horror”, along with its more recent remake, are based on a case worked by the Warrens. The same is true of the new film “The Conjuring”, which explores a case that sends chills up the spine of even the most hardened horror buff.
However, Mrs. Warren says that the case around which the movie is based was nothing compared to the infamous Amityville case. When asked about how the two stack up against each other Warren was quick to say that it the comparison is not even close:
“Amityville was horrible, honey. It was absolutely horrible, it followed us right straight across the country. I don’t even like to talk about it. I will never go in the Amityville house ever again. You don’t know how long my career is; that’s the only one.”
While the Warrens have been criticized regarding the validity of their cases, with some even claiming that they created some of them for publicity, the tales remain terrifying to the movie-going public. Well-made horror films will always draw viewers, from the die-hard fans of the genre to young men looking to trick a date into jumping right into their arms for protection. And afterward we can all go home and check under our beds.
