It’s hard to believe that Gerard Butler has only been in the acting limelight since 2004 when he starred in the film adaptation of the musical Phantom of the Opera. Before that he played small roles in films such as Tomorrow Never Dies and starred in the American TV miniseries, Attila.
Nowadays, the 44-year old former lawyer spends his time meditating in the forest at his Malibu home and jumping from romantic films to action movies to animation.
This summer Butler reprised his role as Stoick the Vast, the chieftain of the Viking tribe and Hiccup’s father in the animated feature How to Train Your Dragon 2. But it was recently announced that the 300 actor will also be starring in the upcoming sci-fi adventure film Geostorm.
In the film, Butler plays a a stubborn but charming satellite designer who is trying to prevent disaster when the world’s climate-control satellites fail to function. As if that wasn’t enough, Butler’s character has to work together with his estranged brother to save the world. Also including a trip into space and a plot to assassinate the president, Geostorm is already being labeled as “over-the-top” and “busy.”
But Geostorm isn’t the only film Butler has on his proverbial plate. He is also currently filming Gods of Egypt, an adventure epic fantasy in which he plays Set, the god of darkness.
“As soon as you hear the word god you know you’re f**ked,” Butler told Yahoo News in a recent interview. “It’s like alright, there’s no getting out of the gym on this one, so I’m playing the god, Set, who’s the god of chaos and fire. He’s kind of like the villain of the piece, surprise, surprise. I don’t normally play villains so it will be interesting.”
Also set to be released in 2015 is London is Falling, the follow-up to the 2013 action film, Olympus Has Fallen in which Butler will reprise his role as Mike Banning, a secret service agent.
Geostorm, written and directed by Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Godzilla) will begin production this fall and will be released sometime in 2016.
