As George Clooney was escorted to a secret service van after being arrested in Washington D.C. during a protest outside of the Sudanese Embassy today, he made a couple of comments on the matter while speaking to the press:
Clooney told a reporter for The Daily Caller that he didn’t mention his planned protest to President Obama during their meeting Thursday, adding that he was at the time most concerned about the well-being of his father Nick, who was also arrested.
“I’m concerned with my father, making sure he’s okay right now, you know. He’s 78 years old and never been arrested before,” Clooney stated. When asked if he’d accomplished what he’d hoped to in regards to the protest, Clooney added, “we’ll find out, won’t we? Sorry officer. It’s a long process so we’ll see.”
The goal of the protest was to “demand immediate action to stop Sudan’s use of food as a weapon… half a million people in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile regions risk starvation because Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is blockading food and humanitarian aid.”
Along with Clooney and his father, Democratic Representatives Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Jim Moran of Virginia and Al Green of Texas were also arrested. Activists including NAACP President Ben Jealous, Martin Luther King III and John Prendergast of the Enough Protest were also in custody.
Fans of the Oscar-winning actor took to Twitter:
