It was announced last year that Atlus would be publishing an RPG based on the wildly popular book and TV series, Game of Thrones. While the announcement was met with excitement, there was some disappointment that the game would focus on two new characters to the world’s fictions instead of the characters in the books.
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age pulled a similar story with outside characters looking in and it worked well because it was a fun game. I’m sure some fans will be disappointed, but just having an RPG set in Westeros should be a form of wish fulfillment for most gamers.
The recently released trailer focuses on the gameplay that the Game of Thrones RPG will be implementing. If it looks familiar to you, then you probably played BioWare’s RPG epic Dragon Age: Origins. This isn’t a bad thing since Dragon Age: Origins was pretty awesome.
It does do a few things that sets it apart from BioWare’s RPG series, especially with the active-pause battle system. While Dragon Age would pause the game outright to let you issue orders or use skills, Game of Thrones just slows down time. The developers claim this is to have the game retain the urgency that Game of Thrones is known for. It’s also a good move gameplay wise since it keeps the tension on the player.
