A state-wide manhunt came to an end on Thursday as the suspect thought to be responsible for a fatal car crash has been taken into custody.

Wednesday afternoon in Winter Park, Fla. a silver Dodge Durango hit slammed into a convertible. The car then jumped the curb and crashed into the side of the the KinderCare facility.

The incident left a giant gaping hole in the structure. The car crash itself led to fourteen victims being injured, many of which were young children.

The driver of the SUV had fled the scene of the accident shortly after it occurred. As for the victims, they were all rushed to area hospitals.

Investigators were eventually able to name Robert Alex Corchado as a “person of interest” in the case. Authorities feared that Corchado had left the area to avoid capture and an effort had been made to seek the man throughout the state.

The 28-year-old man turned himself in on Thursday, almost 24 hours after the car crash occurred. He was charged with leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

According to Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Wanda Diaz, Corchado turned himself in largely because “he had nowhere to go.”

As word of the incident spread and public outrage grew, Corchado likely felt it was in his best interest to be in custody.

The young victim who was fatally killed in the crash was later identified as 4-year-old Lily Quintus. She had been sitting and having her afternoon snack when the car plowed into the classroom. Her mother Nicole was among the voices pleading for Corchado to turn himself in.

She told the Associated Press, “Families are emotionally destroyed because of what he did.”

Corchado, who has been arrested eight times on various charges since 2000, had been out on a $10,000 bond after pleading not guilty to drug related charges, in addition to fleeing the scene of a crash. He is currently being held at the Orange County Corrections Department on $100,000 bond.
