Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year. However, with fall comes the cooler weather and changing leaves that can lead to severe allergies for some.

Dr. Oswaldo Henriquez, an ear, nose, and throat specialist and an assistant professor at Emory School of Medicine, said that his patients in Atlanta, Georgia are experiencing some of the worst allergy symptoms of the year.

“Here in Atlanta we definitely see a lot of people that come with symptoms in the fall time,” Henriquez said. “And it just kind of depends on which kind of pollen they’re allergic to. Or what kind of fungal spores and things like that.”

Along with those pesky dust mites around your house, the other main culprits are ragweed pollen and mold spores that are being stirred up in the soil. “You can be controlled all year in your allergies and then suddenly, in the fall, you get a bump,” Henriquez explained.

Henriquez has some tips for those who need help controlling their symptoms. He said to try a nasal saline to flush out your sinuses first. “There are small ones that give you a small volume of saline, and then we have the bigger ones that are sort of like a power-wash of sinal nasal cavity. And those are, in some folks might be enough to give you some relief,” said Henriquez.

If that isn’t enough, he recommends trying an antihistamine and a decongestant. If none of these medicines work, he suggests going to your family doctor and asking for a steroid nasal spray to clear out your nasal passages.
