  • It’s nearing the end of 2011 and so it’s time for every American media outlet to once again contribute to their annual national birthright: compiling lists!

One of the better compilations to be released today is Facebook’s Most Shared Articles for this year, which presents an intriguing glimpse into what captivated and resonated with the gaze of the nation. Articles covering momentous events repeat throughout the list, such as news of the earthquake in Japan (four articles) and reassurance that, no, your zodiac sign hasn’t changed (three articles). Perhaps most unsurprising about the list of articles is the topic that people just couldn’t sharing: parenting advice (seven articles!).

With more and more news websites incorporating Facebook’s user interface to share, like, or comment on articles, Facebook has become the premiere news outlet amongst friends. Seriously, can you even count how many times you’ve heard the phrase, “Oh yeah, I saw that on Facebook”? Add to the mix the success of news apps such as The Washington Post’s and it becomes clear that, as more people adopt to finding and sharing their news via social media, Facebook appears to control the cultural barometer of this American era.

    The list follows:
