  • Facebook is releasing a new feature for its mobile apps that listens to what users are listening to or watching on TV, so they can easily share it with their friends. Think about it like a Shazam for Facebook that does TV and movies in addition to songs.

If a user turns the feature on (which they have to do for it to work), they’ll have the ability to use their phone’s microphone to identify songs, shows or movies when writing a status update. If you’re watching Louie, you can let Facebook figure that out, and tell your friends for you instead of just telling them yourself.

Users will see an audio icon moving on the screen when they’re writing a status update. If Facebook finds a match, you can choose to add the song, TV show or movie to your post. You can also choose who can see it.

As mentioned, you have to turn it on for it to work. Facebook doesn’t want any more negative attention over privacy matters (it even notes that it can’t understand background noise of conversations). You can also turn it off at anytime. Just click the audio icon in the top right of the screen. It’s also worth noting that no sounds are stored, according to the company.

If you leave it on, you’ll see the moving audio icon when you write status updates. If you share a song, your friends will see a 30-second preview of the song. For TV shows, they’ll see the specific season and episode.

The new feature will roll out on Facebook’s Android and iOS apps in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
