Edie Falco gave an incredibly emotional speech as a tribute to James Gandolfini, the man who played her husband on The Sopranos for six seasons. She got teary-eyed after not too long and audiences were able to tell that it was a very hard thing for her to do. Gandolfini passed away suddenly on June 19 of this year. He suffered a heart attack at the age of 51.

This year, the Emmys decided to take a bit of a different approach to the tribute to those who have passed in the last year section that is typically present in award shows. This year, Gandolfini as well as Cory Monteith, the Glee star, and a few others were given their own tributes and were presented by friends of theirs. Each of them gave very moving speeches and the other people that received special tributes were producer Gary David Goldberg, Jean Stapleton and Jonathan Winters. according to US Weekly.

Falco’s was especially emotional and it was easy to tell that their relationship extended far past their on-screen marriage and see that they were very close friends. She spoke very highly of him and his character throughout her speech, saying things like “You can ask anybody that knew him, if you needed anything at all, ever, Jim was there to take care of it before you even had a chance to ask.”

It was hard for audiences watching at home not to feel emotional as well, as Falco broke down in tears. Anyone who watched him on The Sopranos, or was familiar with his work, knew how special of an actor he was.

This year’s Emmy Awards was very concerned with remembering those that we have lost in the past year, and the somber tone carried throughout. There was even a special tribute given to Librace, in which Elton John played one of his songs and talked about how he has influenced him. Michael Douglas also won an Emmy for his portrayal of Liberace in the HBO film, Behind The Candelabra. Gandolfini played Tony Soprano on the popular HBO series, which earned him three Emmys, according to E Online. Falco’s tribute went into great detail when talking about who he was as a person and such an inspiration to her. Edie Falco can be currently seen on Nurse Jackie, which airs on Showtime and will return in January. Gandolfini also finished one last film before he died called Enough Said with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and is due to come out in theaters soon.

As Falco mentioned, we all knew Gandolfini as an actor, but she was lucky enough to have gotten to know him as a friend. He will be forever missed in the hearts of his fans and especially his friends.
