He’ll be there for you.
Though unpopular with his neighbors in years past for doing extensive construction on his East Village home, David Schwimmer has now won back the favor of several on his street for coming to the rescue after an unsolved neighborhood slashing.
The 47-year old Friends star invited the NYPD into his home to view his home security footage in order to help them investigate the crime further. The camera caught the end of an argument between a 26-year old, a transgender prostitute, and a 21-year old burglar.
The situation occurred early Monday morning when John, who lives in a duplex apartment next to Schwimmer’s home, was having sex with the transgender prostitute when the burgler, Ronert Rainey, broke into John’s home to try to steal his laptop.
The prostitute, who may have been involved with Rainey, sprayed John with pepper spray and ran off. John pulled a box cutter on Rainey but, after a scuffle, Rainey grabbed the weapon and slashed John in the face.
“It started inside and spilled out into the street. There was blood everywhere,” said a law student who watched some of the brawl through the peephole in his door.
Ronert Rainey was arrested and charged with robbery, assault with intent to cause dismemberment and disfigurement, criminal possession of stolen property, and criminal mischief. He was treated at a local hospital for cuts to his arms he received after tossing a brick through John’s glass door.
John was taken to Bellevue Hospital where his facial cuts were stitched. He was not charged with a crime.
Jayson Fillermutter, neighbor of Schwimmer, said, “Four years ago, I would say David Schwimmer was the least popular guy on the block with the construction and all. But he has turned out to be a decent neighbor, and I am glad to hear he helped the cops with that stabbing.”
Though unclear how much Schwimmer’s video helped, Sgt. Tom Antonetti said, “I am sure it contributed in some form or fashion to the investigation.”
Representatives for Schwimmer have not responded for comment.
