On Friday morning, Comcast Corporation announced that its co-founder and current Chairman Emeritus, Ralph J. Roberts, has died.
According to a release, Roberts died of natural causes. He was 95.
“Ralph was a born entrepreneur, a visionary businessman, a philanthropist and a wonderful human being. Ralph built Comcast into one of America’s greatest companies and his vision and spirit have been at the heart of Comcast and our culture for 50 years. He will be truly missed. Ralph’s greatest love was his family, and our deepest sympathies go to his wife Suzanne and the entire Roberts family,” said Comcast in a statement.
In 1963, after serving in the U.S. Navy, Roberts and his partners, Daniel Aaron and Julian A. Brodsky, bought American Cable Systems – a small cable operator based in Tupelo, Mississippi – for $500,000. Within a few years, Roberts turned that into Comcast Corporation – a name achieved by combining the words communications and broadcasting.
“Ralph was a remarkable man who touched the lives of so many people. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and perhaps most importantly, a kind and humble human being. He will always be remembered for his generosity, integrity, honesty, kindness and respect for everyone around him. He was an inspiration to us all and we will miss him greatly,” his family said in a statement.
Roberts served as CEO of Comcast for 46 years. He became Chairman Emeritus in 2011, and held that position until his death. His son, Brian Roberts, currently serves as CEO of the company.
