Two people were injured when a chemical plant exploded south of Chicago Friday.

The company, Blue Island Phenol, manufactures acetone and phenol which is used to manufacture certain herbicides, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

According to the company, the cause of the explosion is attributed to a power outage after a storm, stopping cooling and circulation systems, allowing the heat of the phenol to rise to a level where the chemical exploded.

Television stations in Chicago showed firefighters trying to douse the blaze four hours after the initial explosion, which occurred around 11:30 a.m. Several more explosions occurred subsequently.

The injured were transported to the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, suffering burns.
