Chaka Khan has released a new version of her song “Super Life” as a tribute to Trayvon Martin. The teenager was shot by neighborhood watchmen, George Zimmerman, who claims that he killed him in self-defense.
We reported earlier that Trayvon’s tweets characterized him as not being altogether innocent but rather a typical sinning American teenager. Many people have sided with Martin and believe that his shooting was racially motivated.
The star-studded cast are wearing hooded sweatshirts throughout the video because that is what Martin wore at the time he was shot.
As a mother, Khan wants to use the media and her voice to let her stance on the issue be known:
“I am a mother, and I’m also a mother with a voice. It’s time for those of us who have a voice to speak out for life, for love and for justice using the same media we’ve used throughout our careers,” Khan said in a news release. “Now is the time to use media for the benefit of humanity as a whole. . . We have to be the voice for the voiceless, for the Trayvon Martins of this world.”
Many Twitter users are proud of Khan’s musical protest:
