A cat perched on a cop during a burglary investigation. Then, like so many cats before it, it went viral.

Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson said that officers were responding to a call from a woman who arrived home and found out that she’d been burglarized. Officer Sarah Kerwin saw broken glass on the floors of the basement and a bathroom and noticed that a large orange cat was walking around on it. Having a big heart, Officer Kerwin picked up the cat in order to prevent it from cutting its foot.

Then, the cat perched on the officer’s shoulders and stayed there while the investigation continued. No burglar was ever found, but the cat that perched on the cop’s shoulders stole all of our hearts.

Although the burglar was never located, the description was released.

“The suspect is described as being between 30 and 40 years old, 5-feet tall, and skinny, with curly brown hair. Authorities told the newspaper that the male suspect was wearing a dark-colored track suit with pants tucked into his socks and boots. Another witness said they saw an older white van, driven by a man with dark hair and sunglasses, in the neighborhood.”

Yep, it’s always the man in the creepy white van wearing the track suit. No word yet on whether the orange feline was offered a position on the force, but obviously that will be in the works.
