Cameron Diaz recently shared her views on motherhood with Esquire magazine.

The 41-year-old actress, who appears on the cover of the August 2014 issue, revealed that she is child-free by choice.

“It’s so much more work to have children,” Diaz said. “To have lives besides your own that you are responsible for – I didn’t take that on.”

While she admitted that her decision made things easier for her, she insisted that the decision itself wasn’t an easy one:

“Not having a baby might really make things easier, but that doesn’t make it an easy decision.”

“I was never drawn to being a mother,” she continued. “I have it much easier than any of them. That’s just what it is. Doesn’t mean life isn’t sometimes hard.”

“I’ve never said never to anything in life. If I wanted kids, at any point in life, I would have them,” Diaz told The Telegraph in April. “I … have a lot of girl friends who don’t have children. It’s not like I’m the spinster who didn’t have a child. I just didn’t do that in life, and I’m OK with that. I know the choices I made. I know why I made them.”

Diaz created a stir in May when she addressed a closely related subject: monogamous relationships.

“We all have the same instincts as animals. But we live in a society where it’s been ingrained in us to do these things,” Diaz said.

She later clarified that her remarks were directly related to her The Other Woman character and when taken in that context, shouldn’t be seen as slamming monogamy in general.

“My character says she doesn’t believe in monogamy…! I believe in monogamy. That is an important part of a successful relationship.”

Diaz’ next movie, Sex Tape with Jason Segel, hits theaters on July 18. She’ll also star as Miss Hannigan in the third movie adaptation of the musical Annie which is due out in December.

It was recently announced that Diaz will star in a follow-up to her 2011 hit Bad Teacher.
