  • Baby names just seem to get stranger and stranger by the minute, especially names given to celebrity kids.

Busy Philipps and her husband, Marc Silverstein, named their 8-month-old daughter Cricket Pearl. They already have a daughter who goes by Birdie Leigh.

The Cougar Town actress told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on TODAY Monday that Cricket and Birdie are her daughters’ real names. She said she and her husband thought long and hard on just the right name for their daughters.

She explained that it was just an easier way to avoid a nickname.

“Since I grew up with a nickname — Busy being short for Elizabeth — when my husband and I started to have our babies, we decided that if wanted to call our kids something, we would just name them that thing that we wanted to call them,” said Philipps.

“I like the names,” Philipps said. “I think they’re cute.”

Philipps told the TODAY hosts that felt compelled to defend the Cricket’s name on Twitter just days after her birth in July.

She returned to the set of Cougar Town just weeks later.

“I had to go back to shooting Cougar Town this season four weeks after giving birth to Cricket,” she said with an eye roll, “which was a little intense.”

“But I was also a big pregnant lady,” said the mother of the 8 lb. 5 oz. baby girl. “I gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant, and so then had to go right back into work, which was tricky.”

Philipps told Gifford and Kotb that she took Cricket to work every day, which she said was amazing.

“It’s a real blessing,” Gifford said.

“Yea, Not every woman can,” said Philipps. “I always say, if you’re going to be a working mom, being an actress on a TV show is not bad.”
