Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman for Green Day, was hospitalized over the weekend while in Bologna, Italy for a show. The event was cancelled, but reps for the band declined to say what exactly was wrong with the energetic singer.
Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt, who play drums and bass in the band, uploaded a video to Green Day’s website explaining to fans what had happened and apologizing for the show.
“We apologize profusely — this is really unfortunate — but Billie got rushed to the hospital last night due to illness and the doctors don’t think it’s a good idea for him to play today,” Dirnt said.
“We’re beyond devastated, we’re as sad as you guys are — Billie’s extremely upset about it, and we’ll see you very soon,” Tre added.
The band has kept up a hectic schedule, touring internationally over the past few weeks and traveling to Japan and Germany, among other places. Armstrong, it’s been reported, has been released from the hospital; the band plans to make up the missed show in Bologna soon. However, they have a new album coming out, two music festivals to play, and Armstrong has a mentoring job on “The Voice” this season, so no word on when the makeup show will be.
