A bear stuck in a cookie jar? Classic! Very Winnie-the-Pooh of him!

A young black bear cub must have needed a little snack of animal crackers on Friday when he got his head stuck in an oversized jar and needed to be rescued from a tree in northern New Jersey.

Larry Ragonese, spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department, said the DEP got a call around 6 p.m. Friday from a resident on Lake Riconda Drive in Ringwood about a bear in trouble. The Fish and Wildlife Bear Team was called in and found a 6-month-old male bear sitting in a tree about 40 feet off the ground with a jar on its head.

The call to come to the rescue came from Nancy Lagomarsino who was walking her own dog, Daisy, when she noticed the bear cub staggering around her front yard with an animal cracker container over his head.

The bear saw Lagomarsino approaching through the clear plastic, became frightened and climbed up a nearby tree. The little guy made it up to a height of about 40 feet before getting wedged in some branches.

“Then I realized the poor thing is up a tree with plastic over his head and the sun was just beating right on it,” said Lagomarsino. “I said, ‘oh my gosh, I can’t not do anything.'”

DEP officials said the bear was trying to get the remaining crumbs at the bottom of an animal cookie jar when it got stuck on his head.

The cub was dehydrated and distressed, so rescuers dunked him in some cool water. He was then placed in the care of an animal rehabilitator.

The bear is fine now and will be returned to the wild, far from a cookie — or honey — jar.
