Last year, while home console users were sinking their teeth into Assassin’s Creed III, Sony handheld gamers were also treated to some Assassin’s Creed action. Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, a separate, fully realized Assassin’s Creed game for the PlayStation Vita. The game put players into the shoes of Aveline, a female assassin in 18th century New Orleans, and received decent reviews. However, the Vita platform’s small owner base were the only ones who could experience Assassin’s Creed’s first female protagonist. Until now.
Today, at Ubisoft’s Digital Days event, the publisher announced that it will be bringing Liberation to consoles and PC in the form of Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD. The timing of the announcement is hard to miss, with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag‘s release date less than two months away. Also, Ubisoft recently revealed that PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 owners will be getting an hour of exclusive content featuring Aveline, the heroine of Liberation.
Liberation HD will, according to Ubisoft, be coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC as a digital download. No firm release date, or even release window, has been set, implying that Liberation HD will probably be coming sometime in 2014. The game will feature upgraded visuals, new missions, and what Ubisoft is calling “gameplay refinements.” The announcement trailer for Liberation HD shows the upgraded visuals and teases the story that so many Vita-less Assassin’s Creed fans missed last year:
