Throughout the month of October, everyone celebrates and recognizes the fighters and survivors of breast cancer. To kick off breast cancer awareness month, “Good Morning America” had their correspondent, Amy Robach, undergo a mammogram on live television. She agreed to participate after Robin Roberts, a breast cancer survivor and correspondent, persuaded Robach that if one person is helped by early detection, that it is worth it.

“I was a little reluctant at first,” Robach told Roberts. “I’m 40, I’m the age and I’ve been putting it off.” So, on October 1, Robach completed the mammogram, which she said “hurt a lot less than she thought”, and assumed that was it. Little did she know she was about to get the news that would change her life forever.

During a segment that appeared on “GMA” Monday morning, Robach gave the announcement that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. “The diagnosis that’s still hard for me to say out loud. I have breast cancer,” Robach said. “I know that I have a fight ahead of me. But I also know that I have a lot worth fighting for.”

In the segment, Robach recalled the words of her colleague. “If I got the mammogram on air and it saved one life, then it’s all worth it. It never occurred to me that that life would be mine.”

During an interview after the segment, Robach talked to Roberts and another colleague. “It’s absolutely surreal to be sitting here. But as scary as it all is, I’m so so lucky — because you guys pushed me to that mammogram — thank god you did, I wasn’t in any rush to have that done any time soon.” Robach also thanks Roberts for “saving her life” to which Roberts responded, “You saved your life, Amy.”

Although she has received the most devastating news a person can hear, she will not be facing the battle alone. Along with her family, her colleagues are there to support her throughout her entire fight.
