With no surprise to anyone, American Hustle has the most Oscar nominations of any film this year. It has an outstanding cast, and they have all been nominated as well.

A bit of a surprise though is Gravity, and while it has gained plenty of buzz while also being one of the biggest grossing films of the year, 12 Years A Slave was the film that had previously dominated along with American Hustle, the Golden Globe awards, where they each received seven nominations.

David O. Russell’s latest film, American Hustle, has impressed its fair share of critics since its release, and continues to gain momentum as it heads into the Academy Awards.

The attention of the film is due in large part to the excellent acting, which was good enough to earn nominations in all four of the acting categories.

American Hustle was also nominated for best picture and best director, along with David O. Russell’s screenplay, in order to round out the major categories, earning every possible nomination.

American Hustle tied with Gravity with a total of ten nominations each, and 12 Years A Slave followed closely behind with nine. Along with those three films, the nominees for best picture are Her, Philomena, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club and Captain Phillips.

American Hustle is host to one of the greatest ensembles in a long time, and features Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., and Robert De Niro.

The film received nominations for Amy Adams for best actress, Jennifer Lawrence for best supporting actress, Christian Bale for best actor, and Bradley Cooper for best supporting actor.

This marks the second year in a row that a film from David O. Russell has earned nominations in all four of the acting categories, with Silver Linings Playbook doing the same thing last year.

This also makes American Hustle only the 15th film to receive acting nods in all four categories, just a year after Silver Linings Playbook became the first movie in 31 years to do so.

This year’s race for the Academy Awards is very competitive, and could see any film emerge as the top contender. American Hustle came away with three major awards during last Sunday’s presentation of the Golden Globes, while 12 Years A Slave took home the award for best picture-drama.

The Oscars will pit the two films against one another, and while they seem to be the two biggest films heading into the show, there is certainly a chance for another film to surprise people, which has been done a number of times in the past.

While 12 Years A Slave tied with American Hustle for the most nominations at the Golden Globes, it only ended up coming away with one award. However, American Hustle came away with a successful night, and often the Golden Globes can work well to predict the Oscars.

How will American Hustle do when it competes against 12 Years A Slave and the other nominees?

Tune in to the presentation of the 86th Annual Academy Awards in order to find out. The show will air on Sunday, March 2nd at 8 p.m. on ABC.
