AWS Adds 2 Million More Nvidia GPUs, Tripling Its Order in Five Months

The new Blackwell Ultra, Rubin and Rubin Ultra GPUs arrive in 2027 and 2028, on top of the 1 million AWS committed to in March. The deal also covers Vera CPUs, government AI factories and Amazon's warehouse robots.

Amazon Web Services will add another 2 million Nvidia GPUs to its data centers in 2027 and 2028, the companies announced alongside Nvidia’s quarterly earnings. The order covers Blackwell Ultra, Rubin and Rubin Ultra chips. It comes five months after AWS said at Nvidia’s GTC conference in March that it would add more than 1 million Nvidia GPUs starting this year, and the companies said that “demand has exceeded those expectations.”

Neither company disclosed financial terms. Given GPU unit prices, the deal is worth tens of billions of dollars, TechCrunch estimated.

“NVIDIA and AWS have built one of the great growth engines of the AI era, and demand is running ahead of every forecast,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in the joint release.

The agreement goes well past GPUs. Nvidia’s Vera CPUs are coming to AWS, “some integrated with Rubin, others standalone,” CFO Colette Kress said on the earnings call, according to TechCrunch. The two companies also plan to build AI factories for the U.S. government with 100,000 GPUs on AWS infrastructure for federal and national-security workloads classified at Impact Level 6 and above. Other pieces include NVLink Fusion with custom high-bandwidth memory, integration with the AWS Nitro System and Elastic Fabric Adapter, and continued support for Nvidia’s Nemotron open models on Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker.

Amazon Robotics will also adopt Nvidia’s physical AI platform for its warehouse robots. Kress said that includes the full stack: Omniverse for simulation, Cosmos world models, Isaac for robot development and Jetson computing hardware.

The expanded order lands while Amazon pushes its own chips. On its last earnings call, Amazon said its custom chip business had passed a $25 billion annualized revenue run rate, backed by $225 billion in total commitments from AI labs including Anthropic and OpenAI, TechCrunch noted. AWS executive Peter DeSantis has said the company is in talks to sell Trainium chips to other companies for their own data centers.

For Nvidia, the deal arrived with a strong quarter. It reported second-quarter sales of $96.2 billion, with data center revenue of $89 billion, up 117% from a year earlier, and guided to $108 billion for the third quarter.
