Amanda Bynes is finally out of rehab, but she has managed to tick off a New York judge by not appearing for court. The 27-year-old former Nickelodeon star left rehab after spending four months there and will reportedly seek outpatient help while pursuing a college degree. This all depends on whether she shows up for her next court hearing, though.
2013 has not been a good year for Bynes, and among her other troubles, she was arrested back in May. Police went out to her Manhattan apartment after someone called in a report of someone smoking marijuana. Bynes was arrested after allegedly throwing a bong out the window of her apartment. Since she has been in rehab for a few months, the legal proceedings stemming from that incident are just now taking place.
After a judge declared Bynes mentally competent to stand trial in November, she was supposed to report to court yesterday, but was a no-show. According to NY Daily News, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Diana Boyar was “visibly irritated” with Bynes for not showing up.
“Where is the defendant?” Boyar asked Bynes’ attorney, Gerald Shargel. “Is she still in the hospital?” Shargel told Boyar that Bynes had been released from rehab into her parents’ custody and said that the prosecution already knew that Bynes wouldn’t be present for the hearing.
Even though the prosecution said they weren’t requesting a bench warrant, Boyar said that if Bynes didn’t appear for the next court hearing, a warrant would be issued for her arrest.
It isn’t likely that Bynes will face any jail time in this case, as long as she shows up for future court dates. In the meantime, Bynes is planning to take some college classes to help her get her life back on track. According to lawyer Tamar Arminak, Bynes is thinking about fashion college. “She’s now looking at various colleges with the intention of majoring in fashion design,” Arminak said. “She’s mentioned before she’s interested in creating a clothing line.”
