27-year-old, Amanda Bynes, was scheduled to appear in court today for her DUI arrest in 2012. However, her lawyer, Richard Hutton, has pleaded her case and convinced the judge that she does not have the mental capacity to stand trial. The judge has referred her case to the mental health court.
“The mental health court will examine Bynes and determine her competency to stand trial,” Hutton told E! News.
In August, the judge granted Bynes’ parents temporary conservatorship over their daughter because the judge said that she didn’t have the capacity to give “informed consent” for her medical treatments.
Bynes’ parents filed the petition in July saying: “We are deeply concerned that Amanda poses a substantial risk to herself, to others and to property based on recent events in her life. She talks incessantly about cosmetic surgeries that she wants completed. She also encourages her mother to have plastic surgeries. We are concerned that the surgeries she wants to have are dangerous and detrimental to her health.”
The petition went on to describe Bynes’ extreme paranoia. “She would cover smoke alarms with towels, tape windows shut, and cover her car’s dashboard with cardboard and tape” because she claimed that “cameras were watching her from inside these places,” the petition read.
A permanent conservatorship hearing is scheduled to take place on Sept. 30.
