Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning made quite the splash early this month when it launched on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It was the first game from 38 Studios, but had the backing of fantasy heavyweights like R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane.

EA today announced that Amalur will be getting its first major piece of DLC on March 20. It’s called The Legend of Dead Kel and will add a new continent to the already huge world of Amalur. The new continent is the island of Gallows End.

Amalur has received one DLC pack already, but it was just a few armor sets that are relatively useless after reaching level 10. The new DLC should be much more substantial.

The new content coming with the DLC is sure to have any Amalur fan, myself included, pretty excited:

An Epic New Questline – The Legend of Dead Kel is only part of the story of Gallows End. It intertwines with numerous side quests, multiple dungeons to explore and a colorful cast of characters

New Enemies, Dungeons, Items – Multiple new enemies and enemy variants, a new dungeon type: Dverga Fastings, three new Twists of Fate, eight new armor sets, eight new shields and 18 new unique weapons

The Ultimate Player Housing – Gravehal Keep is more than just player housing, it’s a massive estate with multiple buildings and a full retinue of retainers, each with their own back stories, side quests, perks and quirks

Tons more to Explore – The Legend of Dead Kel DLC adds in more than 15% of additional land to traverse and explore in the already massively expansive world that is Amalur

While some people may decry this DLC as more content that should have been in the game from the start, I welcome new story and places to explore. I have already put 26 hours into Amalur and I’m nowhere near being finished.

DLC is meant to keep the player invested in the game even after they beat it. This DLC should do that nicely especially if the promise of “numerous side quests,” which are the most interesting part of the game, holds true.

While I can’t provide a definite verdict on Amalur yet, I will say that it’s definitely one of the best games of this year so far. It will be interesting to see how it fairs after the other heavy hitters release later this year, but I think it will come up when talking about the great RPGs of this year.

The DLC will launch simultaneously across Xbox 360, PS3, Origin and Steam.
