Just because a movie is rated R or PG-13 doesn’t mean it will appeal to an older demographic. Certain websites recommend movies that are appropriate for families, but what about those in the older age bracket? This is something the AARP decided to address when they started the Movies for Grownups Seal. While AARP has given out Movies for Grownups awards in the past, this is the first time the organization has decided to give new releases its seal of approval. The first movie that made the AARP’s cut is Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
The Movies for Grownups Seal recommends films for the 50-plus crowd. To give an example of the types of films that might receive the Movies for Grownups Seal, check out AARP’s Top 10 movies for 2013. Some titles included are 12 Years As a Slave and Enough Said.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was released on January 17 and stars Chris Pine, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh. The movie is the fifth film that features Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character. The movie isn’t based on a Clancy book, as the past Jack Ryan films have been, and is an original story. “We are delighted to announce the debut of the Movies for Grownups Movie Seal and are thrilled to award this distinction to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” said Myrna Blyth, SVP and Editorial Director of AARP Media.
While some people may be dismissive of how important appealing to the older crowd can be for a movie’s success, the AARP notes that adults in the 50-plus age bracket have been responsible for purchasing one out of every three movie tickets sold over the past six months.
H'wood execs bummed that @JackRyanMovie is drawing a mostly 50-plus aud. What, is Grownup money worth less than callow cash? Sheesh!
