A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a vampire film. But, wait.

It doesn’t happen very often that an independent black-and-white film, spoken in Farsi and subtitled in English, and opening in limited theaters creates such a huge splash. But the buzz is about on A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

It has been described as a “feminist-romantic Iranian vampire movie, with undertones of Goth graphic novel and Sergio Leone western.” If that blend of far-out elements doesn’t raise an eyebrow, just listen.

“It’s an Iranian fairytale and she’s an Iranian vampire,” explains writer and director Ana Lily Amirpour. This is Amirpour’s first feature film. She is of Iranian descent but was born in the U.K. and raised in the U.S. Spin Magazine is calling her “the biggest honest-to-God discovery of 2014.”

Looks like she got here just in time.

And, as if the cool quotient couldn’t get any higher, Amirpour is a skateboarder. In fact, she is the double for the female lead in the film’s skateboard scenes. Yes, there are skateboard scenes in this black-and-white Iranian fairytale about a female vampire set against spaghetti Western music.

“When I was a kid, I consumed shitloads of horror movies,” Amirpour says. “I think I was nine when it started. I was watching Faces of Death when I was like 10. When I was 12, my dad got this camcorder, and I made a slasher, it was eight minutes long. I don’t really go for the horror [now]. I’m into fantasy.

The film stars Sheila Vand as “The Girl”, the lead female. Vand was also in the film Argo and the TV series State of Affairs and Prom Queen. Marshall Manesh, Ranjit from How I Met Your Mother, also stars.
