I’ll admit I’m not the best golfer. Even a full 18-holes of mini-golf intimidates me sometimes, especially if I’m playing against my remarkably coordinated six-year-old nephew. I did shoot a 63 once, but on the next hole I did significantly worse. Still, you can be a great golfer and still never hit a hole-in-one. Or you can be twelve-year-old Naomi Lee and hit two in the same round.
That’s right. Two, two, two holes in one! Golf Digest reports that Lee sank her two aces twenty minutes apart on Pebble Beach California’s Peter Hay executive course March 3.
Lee’s first hole-in-one of the day was an 82-yarder on the third hole, shot with a nine-iron, and her follow-up ace came just three holes later. It was 64-yards long, and shot with a 52-degree wedge. Both were par three holes. While not the greatest distances in the world, I remind you to think of your first hole-in-one. If you even have one to think about, you’ll know that it was tricky whatever the distance. If you don’t (like me), you probably can’t fathom the difficulty. As this guy put it:
Sure, it was a par-3 course but still – TWO holes-in-one in one round? Unfathomable! http://t.co/iPdyQBC4
With her success on the course earlier this month, Lee is now the youngest female to ever mark a double-ace round. She joins the ranks of only 150 people to have ever recorded the feat (only two have done it on a modern PGA tour). Another teen, Aubrey Philips, hit his two holes-in-one back in 2010.
What are the odds of such an accomplishment? Never tell me the odds. Actually, do. According to 2000 Golf Digest-funded study by retired math professor Francis Scheid, the odds of nailing a couple of holes-in-one are 67 million to one. The odds of sinking a single ace? Well that depends on a lot of variables, but the same study reports a range of 3,000 to 1 (for pros on tour) down to 12,000 to 1 (most amateurs). Multiply that by five if you play like me. Or better yet, find another hobby.
The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of #golf are 1 in 67 million. (http://t.co/Du2bBuYa)
Lee beat the odds back in 2009, too. No, this wasn’t her first time hitting a hole-in-one. She has three on the books at the moment.
