Facebook Provides Users With Election Resources

Facebook shared some things with us that it is doing to help people vote in the upcoming elections. "Tomorrow is Election Day and Facebook is committed to encouraging people who use our service to participate in the democratic process. As a result, Facebook is focused on ensuring that all of our users know where they can participate in this year’s elections," Facebook’s Andrew Noyes said in an email.

Twitter Toys With Promoted Tweets in User Timelines

Twitter announced today that it has begun limited testing of its Promoted Tweets, announced earlier this year, in users’ timelines. For starters, they’re only doing this with partner Hootsuite for some users.

Nick O’Neill at AllFacebook has an interesting story, claiming Facebook is testing a new "Facebook Deals" service, which would let businesses provide deals when users check-in to their brick and mortar locations. 

Facebook Creates Individual Pages About You and Your Friends

Facebook announced the launch of new "Friendship Pages". These contain the public Wall posts and commetns between two friends, photos in which they’re both tagged, events they’ve both RSVP’d for, etc. 

These pages will be visible to others if they are friends with one of the people, and have permission to view both people’s profiles. 

MySpace Gets Reborn, With Emphasis on Entertainment

MySpace announced its new redesign along with a new suite of products today. These, the company tells us, will "redefine the company as a social entertainment destination for Gen Y." We’ll see. 

LinkedIn Stays Current for BlackBerry-Using Business Professionals

In August, RIM announced the BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry 6 operating system aimed at delivering "integrated and uncompromising capabilities for consumers and business professionals". Now LinkedIn, the social network for business professionals has a new app designed for this device and operating system.

LinkedIn Lets Users Add More Sections to Their Profiles

LinkedIn announced today that users can now customize their profiles with five new profile sections: publications, languages, skills, certifications, and patents. If you just click on "Add Sections" on you "Edit Profile" page, you can see the whole list of available options. 

Why Not Everyone is a Fan of the New Facebook Groups

Some people really like Facebook’s new Groups feature. Influential tech blogger Robert Scoble could hardly praise the feature enough. He used the phrase "massively cool" more than once in his description. He’s not alone. Many are welcoming the opportunity to separate their friends into different groups and communicate in different ways with them (like chat, email lists, and integration with third-party apps). 

Twitter Search Can Now Index 50 Times More Tweets Per Second

Twitter has changed its entire search architecture, and nobody noticed for weeks until they pointed it out. It must be successful right? It’s supposed to be so powerful that it can index about 50 times more tweets per second than Twitter is currently getting. That’s a lot.

For as simple as these things are, the company took a great deal of time explaining them and their thought process behind each feature.

Advertisers Pay Twitter to Get Suggested with Promoted Accounts

Twitter announced today that its launching the anticipated Promoted Accounts feature. The company is also making its Promoted Products (which also include Promoted Tweeets and Promoted Trends) available through partners. 

Promoted Accounts are being launched as part of Twitter’s "Suggestions for You". 

LinkedIn Rolls Out Career Explorer

LinkedIn has launched a new beta product called Career Explorer, aimed at college graduates.

"Students now have the ability to explore different career paths based on their school, level of education, and desired industry," explains LinkedIn’s DJ Patil. "In addition to visualizing various career paths, they’ll also be able to find relevant job opportunities, top companies, estimated salary ranges as well as the people in their network who can get them there."

The Social Network Runs Away with Weekend Box Office

The Social Network led the box office over the weekend. The film, which opened on Friday, took in $23 million, opening in 2,771 theaters, according to BoxOfficeMojo. 

The film grossed more than doubled the number 2, 3, and 4 movies – Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and The Town. There were only two other major releases to open at the same time: Case 39 and Let Me In. These both brought in only just over $5 million a piece. 

Facebook Launches New Features for Photos

Facebook has introduced 3 new features for Photos. These include high resolution images (storing bigger pictures), a new viewer for browsing photos, and a new uploader with better tagging. 

Facebook is rolling out support for print-quality, hi-res photos. They’re increasing the size of the photos stored from 720 pixels to 2048 pixels on the largest side or 8 times bigger overall. 

Facebook Has a New Feature for Page Exposure

Update 2: Facebook has now officially launched the Page Browser. They have added a couple of features as well. Here’s the announcement.

Update: The page appears to have been removed. This may just be a feature that Facebook is testing. We’ll update when we learn more. 

LinkedIn Announces Signal, New Stream-Sorting Feature

LinkedIn has announced a new beta product called LinkedIn Signal, which the company describes as a new way to view, search and sort your stream of status updates and news. 

LinkedIn Signal comes with five main features: filtering by  browsing only relevant status updates from your stream, search for keywords, topics or people across the stream, getting an auto updated real-time stream with rich content, find trending links across any relevant topic, and  seeing who’s shared any of those trending links. It also lets you save real time searches. 

Twitter to Replace Account Verification System with Something New

There have been several pieces of interesting news regarding Twitter. For one, the company stopped verifying accounts, as it has done for celebrities and companies  for some time. The company is working on a new system to replace this. 

Details about this new system remain a mystery, but Twitter says it will be better. The company’s support team posted the following tweet (hat tip: The Next Web):

Movie Review: The Social Network (The Facebook Movie)

It’s not often I get the opportunity to write movie reviews for WebProNews, because it’s not often that major motion pictures are released about subjects within our general scope of coverage. I had the opportunity to attend a screening of The Social Network last night, so it seems appropriate that I offer my thoughts about the film here.
