First Wii U Commercial Is Trying To Make Me Regret Pre-Ordering It

I am dangerously susceptible to hype. The Wii U is the latest hype machine that got a pre-order out of me before I could rationally think about it. NIntendo hasn’t done anything yet to make me regret my choice, but the first ad for the console is definitely trying.

The first ad for the Wii U to hit the UK came out over the weekend, and it’s a little underwhelming. After the wonderfully absurd non-specific action figure commercial, this one just falls a little flat. It does little to sell the Wii U as anything unique, and instead tells you that Batman: Arkham City, a year-old game, is all new.

Check it out for yourself:

Of course, this is the UK commercial. There still has not been a commercial in the U.S. and it could be much better. Nintendo has had a long history of great ads for their products in the U.S. with the original Wii commercial being one of the best ad televised ad campaigns in recent memory.

Nintendo will hopefully be able to capture the same magic with the Wii U’s ad campaign. That’s not obviously happening in the UK, but Nintendo of America stil has a chance to right these wrongs. The hardcore is already invested in the Wii U so Nintendo just needs to get the casual crowd back on board again. That might prove to be easier said than done.

i may love nintendo more than life itself but when it comes to knowing what gamers want and having people skills forget about it its like theyre the most clueless people on the planet.

UK Wii u will not sell out . Not with that price tag. £20 more than USA I wold pay. £70 more you can forget it Nintendo. And shame on UK retailers ripping us off. When I emailed Nintendo about difference in price. They said it had been set by retailers not them.

I wouldn’t worry yet. The lack of previews and information for certain games is much more worrying than an advert aimed at the casual crowd. I’m surprised how many people this ad has offended. You pre-ordered and this ad was there to make make the millions of people, who haven’t heard of the wii u yet, aware of its existence.

The wii u isn’t sold out in the uk yet which is probably why they’ve come up with this.

    • The ad may not be aimed at me, but it makes me worry for the health of the console. Success among the casual crowd will mean better games for me as a consumer as well. The Vita is a pretty hardcore device, but its lack of traction among other gamers means that I have less to play on it.

Here in the states its sold out on preorder already. Personally I’m excited for the potential that the console is going to have, but I do hope that poor marketing and the “suprise” tactics don’t keep it to hush hush until its to late.
