David Lee Roth does, in fact, have a solo album coming out soon! Reportedly he has been working on it with guitarist John 5.

John 5, who is currently working with Rob Zombie’s band, has helped out other bands over the years, but he started out with David Lee Roth in 1998 with DLR Band. This is a great musical combo and hopefully they were able to conjure up some of that reunion magic.

John 5 seems to think it’s possible and has a lot of confidence in the project he worked on with David Lee Roth.

“[Dave and I] just made another record, and it’s, like, the ‘California Sessions’, [Dave] was calling it,” John 5 said of his project with David Lee Roth. “And it’s 11 of the greatest songs you’ll ever hear, and it’s just me and Dave, and we had Gregg Bissonette play drums on it. And it’s unbelievable. There’s a song called Somewhere Over The Rainbow Bar & Grill. And you know, just great, great songs. And hopefully sometime it’ll see the light of day. But he’s, of course, busy with Van Halen and all that stuff. But it’s an incredible record.”

“[The new album with David Lee Roth] was made not too long ago – like, probably, maybe, a year and a half ago or something like that,” he continued. “‘Cause I always go over to his house and we write music and things like that. It’s a lot of fun.

John 5 went on to compliment David Lee Roth’s sound, saying it was just like it used to be. He seems to think his sound hasn’t changed much! That’s great news for David Lee Roth fans.

“They’re all original songs. I would just go over to his [David Lee Roth’s] house during the day and write this music and then he would book the studio at night. So we would go into A&M Studios – Henson Studios, it’s called now – and we’d record. And it’s so great. I mean, it sounds like just Dave from that Van Halen I or II or Women And Children First era, [in terms of his] singing [style], and it’s incredible, man. It’s really incredible. He loves it too, so maybe it’ll see the light of day sometime.”

So, what’s taking so long? I’m not a recording artist, but a year and a half seems like a lot of time between finishing an album and releasing it to the public. Maybe someone can make that part more clear? Perhaps David Lee Roth’s reported work on a project with Van Halen is taking up his time right now.

David Lee Roth is a busy guy these days!

David, do you believe a solo album is a good idea, at this time? It was a solo album that got you in trouble with the Van Halen brothers, last time.

You don`t know what youre talking about.

There’s nothing wrong with doing a solo album when you have ideas that don’t mesh with your main act. None of the hits from Dave’s first album would have been accepted by the VH brothers. DLR has too much personality to be chained down by anyone. Plus it keeps him happy and allows him to continue being in DLR without being frustrated.

    That is one strange dude.

    • Brian K

But a very wealthy strange dude.

      • disqus_Hklukxx3Bf

        Ha! No doubt!

OnThinIce, Dave is 59 years – I don’t think he needs to worry about the VH brothers too much at this point — he’s obviously wealthy enough if he can maintain homes in NYC, California, and Japan. With VH, there’s a lot of sitting around — the last tour got canceled halfway through and the canceled dates were never rescheduled. When he did the EP, it was right after 1984 and he was getting frustrated with EVH for dragging his feet on a new album, as Dave wanted to get a follow-up out quickly.

from what i heard the last V.H album sucked and Dave’s voice sucked and from what i seen his voice sucked even more live!

    • PnS4EVR

you can’t go on ‘what you heard” I thought it sucked to at 1st, but then, after listening to it over and over , I now LOVE IT !!

      • DLRisVH

        It’s even better on vinyl!

  • speeck freely

now Dave’s blues work is better then the new v.h. stuff!

  • John

Although I love most of the Van Halen albums, including the Van Hagar
years, Dave is quite full of himself. A boy scouts buddy of mine skated
with him in CC after renting him a pair and I spoke with a lady who got
his autograph circa 1978-1979. Both had the same opinion-a Prima D

I love all Van Halen, loved the Dave stuff, really loved the Sammy stuff, for me it was the best written most creative stuff the band ever did, and I even liked the Gary Cherone stuff, it was very progressive and different than the earlier music.
“A Different Kind of Truth” the last David Lee Roth Van Halen album was good in my opinion, but could have been better if Michael Anthony had been part of it, his backing vocals and bad ass bass licks were the missing ingredient, although Wolfgang is a bad ass bassist himself, it’s just not the same.
Michael Anthony had said when heard the new album he knew right away that the songs were nothing new, they were all old song that were sitting around in the Van Halen vault in waiting, and Dave admitted that, saying truthfully that he and Ed had not written a new song together in almost 30 years.
The new album is taking so long because they are working on all new material and from what I have heard over the years, Eddie does nothing fast, and now runs the band like a dictator, thus yelling at his son on stage, and getting into fist fights with his brother in the studio, so good luck getting a new Van Halen album any time soon!

I agree. I say let’s get both Sammy and Dave to get out there and give us a frickin weekend of ROCK. Many groups have more than one singer. Work together for US, VAN HALEN fans.. Atomic Punks and Vintage Halen (love them.. thanks for the tee shirt in Corona!) can warm us all up. I say have some playoffs against the big boys! How cool would that be to see them trade and/or join each other’s bands to get the “best of both worlds”!!!! We are ALL IN IT FOR THE SAME THING!!! We all love the sound that VH brings us. A unique sound that no other band, who writes their own music, sounds like at all. Sammy, please send me some bash tickets. We want to get married by you!

      • stay frosty

        ahhh, no, thanks.

David Lee Roth’s career seemed to have jump the shark years ago. There is no doubt at one time he had considerable talent, I hope his new project gives his career new energy. I didn’t think the last Van Halen CD was great, but it was borderline good. The state of the music industry makes it tough these days, but part of the blame goes to the fan base that eats up some of the garbage music that passes for music these days.

  • stay frosty

Looking forward to some Diamond Dave to tie me over till the next Van Halen.
Tried to update this news on VHND but they have that under review, WTF?!

    • DLRisVH

Let’s hope this album does get released!!!!

      • stay frosty

agreed, I don’t foresee much kickback from the brothers. That’s as long as Dave is learned his history with project prioritizing and the band.
but since their history is to be quiet and not say much, well see.

        keeping those fingers crossed…

What the hell was that? The combination of Japanese traditional music and blues just gave me a splitting headache. Japanese traditional music is best left to those who can actually perform it well and not make a mockery of it. I’m surprised he didn’t add a couple of Japanese anime babes to his video in the background. That would be more in line with his slutty male whore style. I won’t be buying any of his new music tracks. My dog started howling when he heard the music and I had to turn it off within 30 seconds. Dave looks like a huge clumsy oaf trying to do martial arts moves. I wouldn’t mind seeing him do a tour with VH agan. He was at his best doing high jumps and kicks to good rock music. Please stick with what you’re good at and what the people love.

    • Claiborne

Somehow they failed to make “Stay Frosty” a follow-up single… The rest of the latest Van Halen was melody absent and another showcase for Eddie… which is of course pure genius. I think they lost their legs and Dave’s voice midway through that tour. Those guys should have known how to space those shows out at their age. Still learning how to get along after all these fabulous famous years. Van Halen! Enjoy Life!!

      • stay frosty

I saw that tour twice and would have loved Stay Frosty instead of Ice Cream Man.
The problem was more with the predictability of the set (old hits), and Dave’s comfort level with the new songs.
There’s a clip of the band playing “As Is” and it sounded great. No Dave as his thing was, no soundcheck for him…
I love the song, as it is my adopted handle on the web and in life…
        Stay Frosty!

Spandex tights and bleach blonde plugs…nice look!

  • Knucklebones Radio

I’m all for it. Van Halen writes most of their own music. It’s up to those guys to have a sense of urgency.

  • dave or the grave

wish he would put the dlr band back together (john 5, ray luzier) they put out a great album in 98! john 5 and ray are gunslingers man… the whole vh thing is stale already! please bring on the california sessions

  • thecaptain2000

Weren’t his 15 minutes up decades ago? Didn’t anyone tell him? Never thought I’d hear this name again.

  • Ou812 so did I

Always been a Roth fan and always will be.

  • Been there done that

Truth be told, Van Halen put out their best music with Sammy Hagar on the microphone. Dave is good but he is a total show off.

  • Ednthegang can no longer hang.

WTF!!!!!! The Sword Fakie was BS.. THAT STUPID OPEN TUNING? WTF was that?
Dude has outlived his Fake a tude.. Give us all a break and Eat’em and go away, forever. I knew is was going to be some empty , self absorbed, fodder..
EVH, will always be one of the best, but over the years, he has just destroyed himself, running with the devil and his personal, inner demons. That Last VH Disk , was an absolute POS and I didn’t say Product of Substance..Rich or not, famous or not.. They are all tired and need to look around and see what’s really going on.. The youth of today are misguided but they sure as hell can do lots more and play rings around these old drunken, drugged out, old farts.. I have had enough…
Your comments are noted and you have that right.. My feelings are as such and that’s enough…

    • david95

And the English language completely changed since he used to sing. I couldn’t understand a word of your rant. Sorry. :)

  • Vanhalenluvr

Cmon! Dave gime a break!!!!! your not 25 anymore

  • CashMoney

I like real music like Gov’t Mule, Grateful Dead and Blackberry Smoke.
VH and David are both washed up…

  • Karl Hand

With David Lee Roth as their front man, VH was little more than a cheesy cover band. I’m surprised they didn’t cover Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman”.

  • Thomas Howard

At his age he can re-release ” jump” with new lyrics and call it ” Dump” Gotta take a Dump, might as well dump. Gotta take a dump…….

    • david95

You mean young people don’t take dumps? You know, I really don’t think it’s good for you to hold it in like that. :)

      • Thomas Howard

        • Thomas Howard

Oh sure, younger people take them too, However!!!! When you get to be Dave’s age being plugged up happens so often you actually look forward to them. It becomes something to brag about.

  • DBLEagle

    Not good Dave…Not good…

  • alvord1430

He needs to come out of his shell.

  • Michael Bergman

I love his self absorbed attitude his sense of style. I find it interesting to watch a man say up your ass I’ll do my own thing and be happy! After all these years it’s all for his personal happiness and that my friend f@#$%ing rocks!!

  • Grovre Turlenberg

” Somewhere Over the Rainbow Bar & Grill” see… see it’s a play on words… whooo ayyyea. Hey turn my mic up so everyone can hear my jokes.

  • Mr. Majestic

  • sammy wilson

if that guy isn’t gay nobody is.

  • Reality

David, so back to sleep and take your old man pills.

  • Thomas M. Parker

What Dave really looks like without photo filters.

  • john

Love the Skyscraper album with Steve Vai. !!!WOW!!! I think this is a great idea. Dave is a very talented guy and much more than just Van Halen’s front man. I have always respected Dave’s work and his corroboration with great guitarists like Ozzie does. Cant wait toad it to my collection.
