Ayesha Curry, wife of NBA basketball star Steph Curry, tweeted her opinion on the latest fashion trends and why she would choose classy outfits over trendy clothes, but some people took her thoughts the wrong way.

In a tweet she posted on December 5, Ayesha said she prefers to cover up the “good stuff covered up for the one who matters,” which garnered 14,000 re-tweets 19,000 likes. While many of her followers agreed with her, others took it as “slut-shaming.”

Twitter user donielle felt like Ayesha’s words were “condescending” and “slut-shamey” even though Ayesha did not intend to make her followers feel that way. One Twitter follower pointed out Ayesha sounded like she was comparing women’s bodies to consumer goods. Others lectured her on how wrong the tweet was.

Ayesha Curry was apparently browsing a fashion magazine when she wrote the now-viral tweet. In another post she wrote she would go for “classy over trendy any day of the week” before adding the hashtag #saturdaynightinsight. She slammed negative tweets saying she does not care if people like her taste just “do not tear women down and degrade them...”

Meanwhile, her husband Stephen took to Instagram to defend Ayesha. He wrote “My woman...#theinstagator” alongside a close-up photo of his wife.

Ayesha’s preference for not dressing provocatively became the topic for discussion on NewsOne Now on Monday. Roland Martin along with the News One Now panel talked about her tweet and how the social media audience took it.

Dr. Wilmer Leon, NewsOne Now panelist, attributed people’s negative reaction to a “generational issue” wherein Ayesha seemed to be subtly criticizing the popular trend in fashion.

On the other hand, GOP strategist Paris Dennard sympathized with Ayesha Curry saying: “As a married woman, I choose to dress a little more classy for my husband.”
