Zynga may be in negotiations to purchase OMGPOP, makers of the immensely popular Draw Something, a game for iOS and Android devices.
Citing “a source with direct knowledge of the discussions,” TechCrunch is reporting this afternoon that Zynga and OMGPOP are still in the early phases of talks. They also say that there may be other companies competing to buy OMGPOP.
Draw Something is an app that challenges players to guess what their friends are drawing. The game, which was only released a few weeks ago, has already seen 20 million downloads and upwards of 10 million daily active users. It also recently supplanted Words With Friends as the most popular social game.
Zynga may be trying to do with Draw Something what they did with Words With Friends. Rather than making their own version of the game that would compete with the super-popular original, they simply bought NewToy, the maker of Words With Friends. Buying OMGPOP would allow Zynga to capitalize on Draw Something’s immense popularity without having to go to the trouble of actually making their own competing app.
Draw Something is available in the iOS App Store and on Google Play as a free download. There is also an ad-free version available on both platforms for $0.99.
