Zach Braff made headlines last year for attempting to fund his next indie film project using the crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. His Kickstarter campaign came on the heels of the record breaking Veronica Mars movie one. While people generally praised Rob Thomas and team’s quest to fund the Veronica Mars movie, Braff became one celebrity too many for the public, and his efforts divided the masses.

No matter where people stood on Braff’s artistic abilities or his creation of a Kickstarter campaign, his film got funded by over 46,000 of his fans, and it quickly reached its $2 million goal.

Braff’s Kickstarter film Wish I Was Here premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Three months later, an official trailer has been released for the movie.

According to the IMDB summary for Wish I Was Here, Braff plays “Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, father, and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He winds up trying to home school his two children when his father can no longer afford to pay for private education and the only available public school is on its last legs. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.”

The Wish I Was Here trailer uses a Braff signature by integrating a song by The Shins. In Garden State, his character and Natalie Portman’s one discussed The Shins’ song New Slang. Now a decade later, The Shins’ Simple Song highlights his new film.

Simple Song plays throughout the trailer while streams of images from the movie take over. The only dialogue used in the trailer is when Braff’s character Aidan tells his daughter to pick any wig she wants. He states that the only condition is that it matches her uniqueness, and then there is a scene of the family at a wig shop.

Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Ashley Greene, Jim Parsons, and Donald Faison also star in Wish I Was Here. The film will be released on July 25.
